Twenty seven years after the blast, the direct path of the pyroclastic flow from the eruption is nearly a wasteland, with life just starting to return to the area.  The flow path can be seen dropping from the mouth of the caldera.

This hill, near the miner's car, was hit hard by the force of the eruption.  Plants and trees in the lower area were protected by a small hill between the mountain and the top of the hill.
